FLU Workgroup - Free, Local, and Underserved
This OAIC project works to prevent vaccine-preventable disease in adult populations that are typically underserved by existing preventive health services. The F.L.U. Workgroup gathers donations of vaccine and clinical supplies for distribution to groups such as: homeless, low income, racial and ethnic minorities, home-bound and disabled persons, battered women, sexual and gender minorities, non-English speakers, and others that may not have been likely to be vaccinated.

Each year, this Workgroup provides influenza (adult and pediatric), pneumonia, and Tdap (tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccines to a variety of agencies statewide. This is accomplished through identifying ‘gatekeeper’ agencies that already have good rapport with members of underserved groups. Through this partnership OAIC can either supply them with supplies and vaccine or work with them to set up a free clinic for their clients.
For those agencies that do not already provide medical services, the OAIC recruits volunteer vaccinators from the community and partners with area Nursing and Pharmacy schools so students can gain clinical experience in a supervised setting. During 2009, we provided over 3,500 doses of vaccine to clients of more than fifty agencies and partnered with more than eight health profession schools across the state.
